A melting pot of Aboriginal culture, South-East Asian influences and the gateway to the tropical North – Darwin is not only Australia’s most remote city, but perhaps its most characterful too. Once a tropical frontier town, Darwin now a modern and exciting city, that offers a unique Aussie experiences. Visit in the dry season (April-October), to appreciate its hot days and balmy nights at city’s attractive waterfront. There you can surf the man-made wave lagoon, or wander amongst landscaped tropical gardens. Darwin’s Museum and Art Gallery features some fascinating exhibitions that tell stories form the cities past – including the disastrous Cyclone Tracy, the WW2 bombings and Sweetheart – a saltwater crocodile that once terrorised Darwin’s fisherman! Come sunset, make a beeline for the Mindil Beach sunset markets – explore over 300 stalls featuring local crafts and Asian street food or kick back and enjoy the live entertainment.
Around an hour from Darwin, Lichfield National Park is a popular escape for city dwellers who come to hike, swim and camp amongst this ancient landscape. A land of waterfalls mysterious sandstone rock formations, and towering termite mounds you’ll be able to escape the heat of The Top End in one of the many refreshing plunge pools. Picnic or BBQ by the falls, or take a walk besides shady creeks, before cooling off with a swim. An abundance of wildlife includes birds, lizards and flying foxes! If hiring a motorhome there is the option to camp in the park, otherwise the nearby town of Bachelor, makes an excellent base to explore Lichfield National Park from.

Said to be where the outback meets the tropics, Katharine is the perfect location to explore nearby Nitmiluk National Park and the spectacular Katharine Gorge. A land of natural wonders, you can bathe in thermal springs, kayak between sandstone cliffs or hike to cascading waterfalls. Whether seen from the air or on a sunset boat cruise, the gorge will leave you with lasting memories of this other worldly paradise. Learn more about the areas cultural significance to its aboriginal people at one of the towns gallery’s or museums or join in the Barunga Festival. This annual celebration of indigenous music, culture and sport is a unique opportunity to engage with the indigenous community.

Welcome to Kakadu National Park, Australia’s largest and most diverse national park and a world heritage listed site. A land of rainforest, waterfalls, rocky escarpments and flood plains, Kakadu is the ultimate outback adventure. Take a sunset cruise on the Yellow Water Billabong as you search for the fierce salt water crocodiles that reside here. During the dry season you can hike to the magnificent Jim Jim Falls, or for an unrivalled view take to the air on a scenic flight – the only way to access these during the wet season. Marvel at thousands of year old Aboriginal Art, or take a safari with an indigenous guide. We recommend a stay at the Cooinda Lodge – a comfortable retreat in the heart of the park
