Western Fly Drive

This 21-night tour invites you to experience the very best of America's true Western Heritage. You will be covering three of the rocky Mountain states ~ Wyoming, where the vast expanse of sky touches the horizon as far as the eye can see; Montana, home to dramatic scenery of mountainous terrain and open prairies of old Native lands; Idaho, an undiscovered, unspoilt and unhurried territory of wild scenic rivers and perhaps the most beautiful wilderness areas you'll ever see.

  • Flathead Valley
  • Yellowstone
  • Glacier National Park
  • Grand Teton National Park
  • Salmon River rafting
  • Lewis and Clark Historical Trails

This is just an example itinerary for a Yellowstone and Glacier Park fly drive. If you have a different route, schedule or fly drive in mind, please email us for more details or call us on 01892 511894.

Day One
Arrive from your transatlantic flight into Bozeman. Collect your car and transfer to your chosen hotel for one night.

Day Two
Head west and travel via Three Forks to Montana's capital city, Helena, home to one of the richest gold strikes - Last Chance Gulch. History has left Helena with a wealth of monuments and architecture. Take a trip on the Last Chance tour train for a quick drive by of Helena's historic areas. Overnight in Helena.

Day Three
It was the Giant Springs here that captivated the pioneers Clark and Lewis. The area is rich with their history and is now home to the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Centre. The area was also home to cowboy artist Charles M. Russell and his Museum complex is well worth a visit. Overnight in Great Falls.

Day Four
Head northwest out of Great Falls, through Choteau to the Blackfeet Reservation. Choteau is paleontologists dream as it is the location of a dinosaur breeding ground. Browning is the headquarters of the Blackfeet tribe and is a thoroughly Indian town. After exploring this area, head into the East side of Glacier Park for your three night stay.

Day Five
Glacier Park is home to 1,500 miles of scenic wilderness. One of the most spectacular drives is the Going-to-the-Sun road and you could leave the car for the day and take one of the red roll-top park buses for a guided tour of the area. Watch the sunset from an evening lake cruise on St Mary Lake.

Day Six
Take a trip to Two Medicine for more spectacular scenery. Combine a hike to Twin Falls with a boat ride across Two Medicine Lake or rent a canoe on the Lower Lake. You could also take a horseback ride into the park.

Day Seven
Travel through the Lake McDonald Valley and leave Glacier Park but travel into the beautiful Flathead Valley, home to Whitefish and Kalispell. Experience white water rafting on the Middle Fork of the Flathead River or rent a mountain bike to explore the Flathead National Forest. Spend tonight in Kalispell.

Day Eight
The Flathead Lake is a playground for many water sports but if you feel like relaxing you could take a two hour Lake cruise and take in some wildlife watching. Spend tonight in Missoula, the hub of Western Montana, and home to many students and artists.

Day Nine
Travel south through the stunningly beautiful Bitterroot Valley, made by the river of the same name. To one side of the road you can see the heavily wooded Bitterroot Mountains and to the east, the Sapphire range of mountains. Cross the border into Idaho and on to Salmon where you will be spending the next three nights.

Day Ten
Salmon is one of Idaho's contenders for the state's Whitewater Capital as it is the staging centre for the start of float trips down the main Salmon River and the end of trips down the Middle Fork. The Salmon river remains one of the few undammed waterways in America and it roars through the River of No Return Wilderness, the largest single wilderness area outside Alaska.

Day Eleven
After an exciting day of rafting relax in Salmon Hot Springs or at Elk Bend Hot Springs. You could spend time in the wilderness areas by either hiking, joining a trail ride or horseback riding.

Day Twelve
Head today to Virginia City. Originally home to another one of the richest gold strikes. The town is thought of as an open air museum of the early mining West with its five streets of original and restored buildings from the 1860's. Its neighbouring Nevada City was a ghost town that has been restored to create an outdoor museum. Spend one night in this area.

Day Thirteen
Travel south towards West Yellowstone, one of the official park entrances and has many hotels, motels and a range of eateries for the weary traveller! It is also home to the Grizzly Discovery Centre where you can see rescued bears being looked after in a safe and caring environment. It is also a Wolf sanctuary and you can often hear the pack howling as you settle down for the night! Feel free to howl back!

Superior - Holiday Inn Sunspree
Standard - Three Bears Inn

Day Fourteen
Today you will be heading for the Targhee Resort Area on part of the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway. Take time to stop to see and hear the thundering waters at both the Lower and Upper Mesa Falls. Continue south into the Grand Targhee Resort area. Settle into your hotel in Targhee for three nights.

Day Fifteen
This area is one of the West's most beautiful resorts. It is uncrowded and offers many activities including hiking. To make use of the ski lifts in summer you can be taken up the mountain in the summer and left to take a leisurely hike back down!

Day Sixteen
Today you could hire a bike and take the 2.5 mile trail around the mountains or sign up for a horse trail ride through the Jedediah Smith Wilderness. Enjoy an authentic cowboy cookout in the evening.

Day Seventeen
Head west through the Teton Pass into Wyoming and the Grand Teton National Park. View the shardlike mountains that offer the most amazing backdrop as you head towards Jackson. The town is located in the Jackson Hole Valley, encompassed on all sides by mountain barriers. Spend some time people watching from the town square which is surrounded by boardwalk fronted galleries.

Day Eighteen
Leave Jackson and head north to Yellowstone National Park. This is the worlds oldest national park and is home to more than 300 steaming geysers, bubbling mudpots and a huge range of wildlife including bears, elk, moose and the recently reintroduced wolves. You will be spending three nights here.

Day Nineteen
Take the time to travel through both loops of the park to enjoy the reknowned sights of the Old Faithful Geyser, Inspiration Point, Yellowstone's Grand Canyon, Mammoth Hot Springs and the Fountain Paint Pots. Yellowstone is such an accessible park that nearly all its attractions are within a few hundred feet of the Grand Loop Road.

Day Twenty
Today is yours to explore the areas you may have missed yesterday! You could also join a horseback ride through the park or soak in the relaxing water at Chico Hot Springs, 30 miles north of Yellowstone.

Day Twenty one
