Day Three Leave Phoenix and travel north, stopping for a visit to Montezuma's Castle, an ancient cliff dwelling built by the Sinagua Indians. After lunch in the ambient red rock country of Sedona, head on through Oak Creek Canyon - you could stop for a swim here at Slide Rock Park. Arrive into the Grand Canyon National Park and enjoy watching the sunset over this mighty wonder.
Day Four Drive east, with a quick photo stop at Grandview Point, to visit Tusayan Ruin, where you can see remnants of an Anasazi Indian pueblo. Travel through the Painted Desert to Page, where the desert meets the deep blue Lake Powell, formed by the Glen Canyon Dam.
Day Five You have a whole day to enjoy on and around Lake Powell. Take a boat trip past great fjords and sandstone canyon walls to the stunning Rainbow Bridge, the world's largest natural rock span. Enjoy a short raft trip on the Colorado River or get away from the water and take a jeep tour to Corkscrew Canyon.
Day Six Travel to Monument Valley, the scene of many Western movies. Its towering buttes, rippled sand dunes and jagged pinnacles make it an alien landscape. Take the 17 mile self guided scenic drive that loops through the valley or join a guided tour or horseback ride.
Day Seven Travel through the Four Corners and the Anasazi ruins at Hovenweep to Mesa Verde National Park. Explore the native cliff dwellings within the park and visit the museum and visitor centre to learn the culture of the Mesa Verde Anasazi. Since 1978 the area has become a World Heritage Site.
Day Eight Head into New Mexico and onto Taos Pueblo, one of the country's oldest continually inhabited settlements and still home to Indians. Located at the foot of the Sangre de Christo mountains, the Pueblo is one of the most picturesque pueblos in the South west.
Day Nine Spend today relaxing around Taos . The cultural mix and dramatic setting has drawn artists and writers to settle here. Visit the many art galleries, shops and studios that occupy the brown stucco buildings that surround the town plaza.
Day Ten A short drive to day to the cultural soul of New Mexico, Santa Fe. Low adobe buildings and narrow winding streets lead to a handsome plaza which is the centre of commerce, festivals and history in the city. Spend two nights at the Courtyard by Marriott.
Day Eleven Spend today in Santa Fe, visiting the many galleries and Native and Spanish shops. For the outdoors enthusiast the Rio Grande offers raft trips or enjoya guided horseback ride into the local foothills. Alternatively you could take a trip on the historic Santa Fe railroad.
Day Twelve Leave Santa Fe and head for Albuquerque. The city sits astride the Rio Grande and is a modern bustling city that has managed to retain its Southwest flavour. The Old Town is an historic zone and is the Spanish heart of the city. The Plaza and adobe buildings surrounding it house more than 100 shops and restaurants. Stay in Albuquerque for one night.
Day Thirteen Today you will be heading back into Arizona and into the land of the Navajo and the Hopi Indians. Your destination is Chinle, a small town lying just west of the 26 mile long Canyon de Chelly, home of Anasazi cliff dwellings and traditional Navajo life preserved in its spectacular canyons.
Day Fourteen You have today to fully explore both Canyon de Chelly and the adjoining Canyon del Muerto. They both feature a paved scenic rim drive with spectacular viewpoints. Join a jeep tour or a horseriding tour of the inside of the canyons for a very different viewpoint of the area.
Day Fifteen Travel south to Holbrook via the Hubbell Trading Post. From Holbrook you can visit the nearby Petrified Forest which contains an abundance of petrified logs from coniferous trees, an part of the Painted Desert, an area of sand and stone that displays different hues at different elevations. Spend tonight at the Best Western Arizonian Inn.
Day Sixteen Today you will be heading back to Phoenix for your last day. Spend a relaxing afternoon and evening shopping for last minute souvenirs. Enjoy an eveningmeal out in one of the city's many restaurants or have a cowboy dinner and dancing at Pinnacle Peak Patio!
