An Introduction to Beach Holidays

We all deserve a little something special this year so why not give yourself a luxury beach holiday to look forward to this summer?

There are many beautiful places across the world, from the lush Caribbean Islands of St. Lucia and Antigua to the remote, romantic seclusion of Mauritius and the Maldives. You could explore the luminescent bays of Puerto Rico or beautiful beaches (and unique culture) of Cuba or Mexico

If you are looking to stay a little closer to home, we can certainly help to organise a trip to the beautiful white-washed oceanside villages of Greece, or to the explore the stunning Turquoise Coast of Turkey.

These destinations, and many more like them, offer incredible experiences and are a great choice as a stand alone holiday.

But, if you have been thinking about taking a trip to North America but don't want to miss out on your much needed week of beach rest and relaxation, you don't need to put it off any longer! It's much easier than you might think to add a beach stay onto your next holiday to America or Canada!

The Best of Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico sits pretty in the centre of the Caribbean Islands, between the Dominican Republic and British Virgin Islands. With warm and tropical weather throughout the year and 300 miles of coastline and almost the same number of beaches, it could prove to be your perfect excuse to sit back and relax. For those that need more to do and explore on your trip, Puerto Rico does not disappoint, from the historic capital city of San Juan to El Yunque, the only subtropical rainforest in the U.S. Since the island is a U.S territory, getting here is incredibly easy and driving here is the same as driving on the roads and highways of the continental states.

**Puerto Rico, or any of our beach destinations, can also be added as a short break at the beginning or end of any of our other fly-drive itineraries. • Rio Grande
  • El Yunque Rainforest & Cayo Icacos
  • Vieques

San Juan

Welcome to Puerto Rico! San Juan is the beating heart of the Island's history and culture; home to a diverse array of restaurants, shops, museums and salsa bars. Take a culinary tour of Old San Juan and visit Castillo San Felipe del Morro, an 500 year old Spanish fort where you will learn about the Island's history and why Puerto Rico's strategic location in the Caribbean made it an important port for those trying to expand their reach in the New World, and how the United States used the fort during both World Wars.

The Santurce neighbourhood is known as the artistic heartbeat of the island and is well worth a visit. Located south of Condado, Puerto Rico's answer to Miami's South Beach, Santurce is enjoying a renaissance including an influx of new restaurants, shops, galleries and museums. Make sure to pause and admire the abundance of bright murals and street art as you stroll through the area.

Rio Grande

 25 miles

This morning, make the short journey to Rio Grande, an area known for its luxury hotels, chamionship golf courses and the incredible El Yunque Rainforest. While here, take a tour of the rainforest, which is the only subtropical rainforest in the US. The area is full of hiking trails, waterfalls and streams and 240 species of trees. The Yokahu Observation Tower offers spectacular panoramic vistas from the top of its spiral staircase.

Take a catamaran day trip to Cayo Icacos, with its unspoiled beaches and unbelievably clear blue water. The area is well known for its abundant marine life, making it a great place to go snorkelling! Another great way to spend an afternoon, especially if you're hungry, is visit Luquillo. There are around 60 family owned kiosks here selling food, drinks and souvenirs. They are all open-air and many face the beaches, providing a great spot to while away the day!

5

Vieques

39 miles with ferry or small plane

Today, make your way to the island of Vieques, which is accessible either by a short flight on a small plane or a 1-2 hour ferry journey. It will be worth it though as we think that the island might deliver the highlight of your trip!

More than 60% of the island is covered by the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge, including beaches, bays, mangrove forests, salt flats and trails. There are so many opportunites for fun; go paddle-boarding, diving, bird watching, beach hopping or horseriding, you might even bump into some of the wild horses that roam the island!

While here, a must-do experience is to go night kayaking in Mosquito Bay. Don't let its name put you off though, the Bay has the brightest bioluminescence effects in the world (recognised in 2006 by the Guiness World Records). The amazing glow-in-the dark phenomenon is due to an abundance of tiny dinoflagellates — about 1,000,000 to 2,100,000 microorganisms per gallon of water and provides a truly incredible experience.

Caribbean Beach Holidays

Some say that St. Lucia is the most romantic of the Caribbean islands but it is far more than just a beautiful beach. With its gorgeous mountain scenery, visitors can hike through the lush rainforest in Pidgeon Island National Park and visit La Soufrière, set against the majestic volcanic Pitons, is known for its Sulphur Springs and mud baths. While here, go whale and dolphin watching, snorkelling and even take a scenic helicopter tour.

Surrounded on all sides by tropical coral reefs and as many beaches as there are days in the year, Antigua is a true bucket list destination. Visit historic Nelson's Dockyard, which Admiral Horatio Nelson made his base in the 1780s and Shirley Heights, a former military lookout which offers stunning views across the bay. Of course, a visit to the Antigua Rum Distillery is a must.

With cricket as its national sport and a weakness for afternoon tea, there are definite hints of home dotted throughout this tropical island, but that is where the similarities end. The island is home to tranquil beaches, dramatic cliffs and world class golf and some of the best food in the Caribbean. What are you waiting for?
